Medical Writer and Instructional Designer. April Applegate has developed pharmaceutical sales training programs in a broad range of therapeutic areas, including psychopharmacology, neurology, oncology, infectious disease, and diabetes. In addition to new-hire training, April has also developed topical training for medical science liaisons and specialty representatives; recent examples include a self-instructional program and workshop dealing with stereoisomer pharmacology, used by AstraZeneca to train their MIS team in preparation for the launch of Nexium®, and a case-study based interactive training program dealing with current practices in the diagnosis and treatment of serious gram-positive infections (diabetic foot infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, cellulitis/erysipelas, and surgical site infections).
April's educational and employment background combines extensive biomedical training with experience in both publishing and governmental science policy environments. As a Graduate Fellow of the National Science Foundation, she earned a Master's Degree in Neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland. In 1995, April received an award for distinction in medical communication from the American Medical Writers Association for her work as co-author of The Elements of Medical Terminology, a textbook for allied health professionals.
